The Story, survival of the fittest…
The story is just your typical run of the mill zombie experience. Based around 2 main characters who are trying to survive and get on with their lives. Although you start with these 2 characters, you build your community as you play, finding other survivors to help you along the way. This in turn creates more personal stories for the player with how you meet them and help them as well as how you interact with them if you mess anything up.
The Gameplay…
The gameplay is a mix of survival and action. You collect resources to keep your base and group alive.
You have to travel around the map, collecting the resources and items and then bring them back to your base to store them. You can only carry as much as your backpack allows so for example some backpacks only allow you to carry 6 items. Inventory management is key here. Do you need those 3 medical packs or do you need that extra ammo in case it hits the fan? You’ll be making that choice a lot and although at first you will probably find it frustrating, you’ll begin to quickly understand where you’re at.
Permadeath is a thing in this game. What’s that? You really like that survivor and have spent time leveling him up? Well good news, he just got killed by a pack of zombies because you couldn’t save him in time. There will be plenty of situations where you have to be quick and help them out when needed. Morale will be boosted for the community. If you save them that is…
Weapons and vehicles don’t last forever. You’ll be consistently looking for new and better weapons or find yourself caught in a mess. Weapons often break and can’t be repaired so keep that in mind when raiding houses with infected nearby.
The Graphics…
The game has decent graphics (keep in mind the game came out 10 years ago). The colours are duller than the majority of today’s games but it adds to the grittiness of it all. Houses are often bleak and even in the daylight, it feels dark and depressing. It really makes you feel the hopelessness in the world of trying to survive the inevitable. This is one of the things I loved about the game, the atmosphere, the despair of it all. But that’s how it sucks you in.
In Conclusion…
The game definitely is worth your time in 2023 and you can find it on sale often. So what are you waiting for? Dive right into this zombie-infested world and try your best to survive.
